Pesky Peep Problem...

So, I've been having a problem with my humans.

You see, I'm a dedicated family member. I love my humans and... I guess I even love my Floyd...
So, as a brave and bold Scottie, I see it as my role, no my DUTY to protect the family.

The time when I feel the greatest call to duty is when it gets dark and quiet and they all (including Floyd) head off to bed.

When they're asleep and vulnerable I stand guard near the back door and listen.
And you know what I do and I hear something?

I... BARK, BARK, BARK, BARK!!

It might be a car driving past... BARK, BARK, BARK!!

It might be a neighbour dog... BARK, BARK, BARK!!

It might be a cat climbing the fence... BARK, BARK, BARK!!

It might be.... Well, I think you get the picture...

Now, none of that is really MY problem. MY problem is that the humans just don't appreciate all my hard work! I mean, while they're all cozy and warm in their beds I'm up and alert and ready to do what needs to be done.

You know what I get for doing my job...? I get into... trouble...

They get up, rouse on me and try to make me go to bed. But I ask you; if they're asleep, and Floyd's asleep, and I'M asleep, who is going to stand guard?

Somedoggy?

We all know they can't be trusted!

For now I will do my duty, even though it goes unappreciated. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some sleep to catch up on.

  1. Dougall, you're young and not used to the world (bad as it is) yet. You'll calm down. You're still a puppy. Until I was two, I tried to protect the wild bird food that my peeps put out for the wild birds. When I was on watch, no wild bird got any of that wild bird food. Then, puppyhood stopped and I got more mellow. I just protect MY food and MY peeps. I don't get excited any more over horses and construction equipment like I used to. Ask your peeps about how jerky They were as teenagers and you can laugh at what They respond if They tell you the truth (I'll be surprised if They admit it, but the complaints about you should stop).

  2. OK Dougall, it's time for some Scottie training. Here's the correct method for gurading at night. SLEEP ON THE BED with the peeps, then you can hear everything and see if any of it affects the peeps, if it's not life threating go back to sleep!!! Bites lays next to Dad's legs and always gives a big wiggle if something is up. Me I sleep between the pillows and only go on alert when Bites senses something, that way I get a good nights sleep. Heeheehee

    2. I wish I could sleep on the bed... But Floyd has ruined bed sleeping for both of us! He takes up all the space, hogs all the blankets and some how manages to have his legs EVERY WHERE!!

  6. Me and Nellie often get told off for our barking at night. For some reason our family do not appreaciate all our hard work. It is well known that maremmas like to bark and We are very good at it. Keep on doing your scottie job. Love Nellie and Jasper the two bestest maremmas in the land.

  7. Dougall we do that too and we are certainly not appreciated. We gotta keep eyes peeled for the fox, the milk man 4am , the bin men 5am and the ones you mention. It is a hard life pal being in charge of Homeland Security. Have a terrific Thursday and get some shut-ere.
    Best wishes Molly

  8. Hi Dougall, first I wanted to say "hi" and say sorry because its taken so long for me to get here to your bloggie. You have been so kind to me....thanks! We Aussies need to stick together!! I'm all signed up so I will now see what you are up to! Any who - I agree with your guard duty.... You are just trying to protect your patch... But I sleep at night (in the big bed) so I do my guarding during the waking hours. I have a very loud explosive bark that mum says "makes the ears bleed" so if you get that compliment you are really doing a great job! BOL!

  9. We have night time guard duty too, even though They don't appreciate it! We sleep on the Big Bed, on Them, in-between Them or under the covers with Them, so when we hear even a leaf fall off the trees, we're up and at 'em. To make the problem worse for Them is that we have a Dog Flap. We live in a bungalow and Their bedroom is off the hallway. Near the front door. Next to the Dog Flap. Which sounds like a gunshot when we zoom through it. Suffice to say, there's plenty of nights when She gets out of bed to block up the dog flap ..... then we ALL get plenty of sleep .... sometimes!

  10. I see - you are one of those super alert doggies! Blueberry hardly ever barks. I can see why you are exhausted - being the only sentry on duty is tiring!

  12. Hi Dougall, Sammy here! I too am the watch dog of the family and I too take my job very seriously! I have tried to get Wally to take a shift or two for me but Mr Lazy-Bones prefers his sleep!

    Keep up the good work!

  15. Oh Dougall I feel your pain! I have this exact same problem trying to keep my house safe. Peeps are hard to train, we just have to be patient with them.

  16. Dougall, you ARE doing your job. These humans just don't get it. Cocco keeps trying to do his job, by way of an ear deafening squeal, and it hasn't been very welcomed either!

  18. Listen up Dougall, I feel your peeps pain. Badly. Mr. Fox LOVES to run like a bat out of you know where out that dog door at 2am when hears something, like say, the wind blowing and then bark his head off outside. Do you know what it's like when a doggy runs off the bed and out the dog door when you're in a sound sleep? Not good. I have to get up, because husband won't, and yell at him and he only comes back when I say 'BAD DOG!' Then I'm exhausted and grumpy the next day. Grumpy humans are no good. Maybe we don't give as many treats and growl... Just know this little pup, the peeps got it covered - the doors are locked and they know if anyone comes in you will rip them to shreds. Now, let them sleep. Ok? Ok.
