Kengal: The Sleeping Dingoes

This week my Peep was lucky enough to be invited to participate in a program called "Connection to Country". A program to teach people (in this case teachers) about the culture and history of the local indigenous people, the Wiradjuri people.

When she came home she told Floyd and I a Dreaming story about a sacred place called Kengal and two special dingoes. Dingoes are wild dogs that have lived in Australia for thousands of years.

A wild dingo, isn't he a handsome fellow?

The Dreaming story says that Baiame, the great creator, came to Wiradjuri Country to teach the people how to make fire and spears. But when White settlers came to the area they said something to make Baiame leave his people. But he left his two companion dingoes, a male and a female, who still lay, sleeping, waiting for his return. Their sleeping bodies form the shape of Kengal a large sloping rock formation.

Can you see the Dingoes, curled up together, sleeping, waiting...?
Speaking of sleeping...

    1. They are, and they play an important part in Wiradjuri culture. Kengal is an initiation site for men.
